Opening up Facebook is something you do automatically when waiting in line or taking the bus, but we wanted to know what people do when they look at Facebook. Do they use it to find a new colleague for the job opportunity that has just opened up in their  company? Do they try to find their own new position? That’s why we set out earlier this year to conduct the Adecco 2015 Work Trends Study, and here is what we found: If youre not there yet, youre missing the trend: Many recruiters are already very active on social media in sourcing candidates, highlighting their job  ads, networking and positioning themselves as thought leaders. Companies are also using social networks to  promote themselves as attractive employers and to get into real-time exchanges with their followers  and applicants. So as a recruiter yourself, you also need to take into consideration that job seekers  are already there! 23% of job seekers said they are using Facebook for professional uses compared to 28% who are using  LinkedIn. Surprisingly, many recruiters stated in the study that they are active online (25%),  but not using social media for recruiting activities. As we saw in the Adecco Global Social  Recruiting Study 2014, this is based on a lack of training and knowledge. Since Social Recruiting is a  fairly new discipline, recruiters will have to learn from their peers sharing their own knowledge  online (such as blogs such as Undercover Recruiter), read current literature or learn by trial and error. Another good argument, if you are not convinced yet, is that 24% of candidates stated that they use  social networks to keep in touch with recruiters and head-hunters. If you belong to the “Facebook-is-something-for-younger-people” group of recruiters, then you are potentially missing out on good  business. They have an eye on you: Are you reading CVs and applications by the hundreds every week and completely forgetting that you are  being checked out on, too? Well youre right 23% of job seekers check you out on LinkedIn and  17% will also look you up on Facebook. So don’t just judge applicants based on the content they  publish online but also consider that your credibility is being assessed, too! Do make sure you have a  polished profile, good recommendations and check your privacy settings where needed. Reputation is what the media says about me: If this statement sounds like something  youd say, please rethink your strategy. In the past few years, many pages that collect ratings and  recommendations on products and also employers have conquered the online marketplace. Just as  you will read up on other peoples’ experience with a smartphone before you buy it, applicants will  want to know more about the habits and culture of a company â€" things that are not printed in a  glossy brochure. Glassdoor, for example, has continuously grown across the globe and is becoming  the website to give you those insights. In our study, 20% of job seekers will go to LinkedIn and 21%  also to Facebook to read about what others say about employers and this has effects on all aspects of  your recruiting process ranging from your website, online application process, your communication  throughout the application and your attitude towards applicants. If you want to be considered as an  attractive employer, you should consider actively managing your online reputation. Job seekers are making the most of their time: Through  the Work Trends Study, we found that job seekers use their mobile device for online job seeking either  frequently (32%) or sometimes (33%). This lies in the nature of how we have grown accustomed to  using smartphones â€" basically everywhere. Since it is common knowledge that looking for a new job  during office hours is bad practice, job seekers will do it on their way to work or when they need to  kill time. The implications for companies are huge: the whole application process needs to be mobile  friendly, starting with job search, offering easy online application systems and making use of 3rd party  integrations such as the “apply with LinkedIn” button. It also means that an employer’s social media  pages need to be looked after and tended to, that online reputation is managed actively and that the  employers’ office and contact details are easy to find on Google Maps. As the end of your first semester nears, it’s probably getting to the point where you and your university flatmates are either completely inseparable or are still making awkward conversation when you accidentally decide to have breakfast at the same time. It’s still early university days and friendships can still blossom; there is still time to salvage the seemingly doomed relationship between you all if you follow these fool proof tips. Organise a group meal Assuming you all have a group chat (if not, that’s definitely a priority), message everyone suggesting a sit down dinner, but make sure it’s home cooked and not a takeaway. Find a date that suits everyone, work around everyone’s dietary requirements and assign a food that each person is responsible for. This makes it completely unavoidable; it’s cheap for all, they’ve already confirmed that they’re available, everyone’s dietary needs are accounted for and the responsibility of bringing an item to the table makes it personally important for each flatmate to turn up. Sunday nights are notoriously the time to recover after a weekend of heavy drinking, and there’s nothing gentler than curling up in your duvet with a good film. Put on an all-time classic, raid your cupboards for snacks and invite everyone over for a cosy night in. It may not be the most social option on here as a movie mainly involves sitting in silence for about two hours, but getting everyone together once a week for something fun can break the awkward barrier between you all. Throw a party Throwing a party is super exciting, and nine times out of ten every flatmate wants to help with the planning. You get the joint buzz of hosting, you deep clean the flat together, you co-create a music playlist and each help with the decorations. It’s perfect for bonding as you’ll mingle with everyone’s friends, easing any awkwardness between you all, and you’ll be reminiscing about how good of a party it was for months to come. It’s also completely unavoidable for each flatmate as it is literally happening in their home… unless they decide to flee the campus for the night. Why We Wait So Very Long To Do What Feels Right Throughout my 34 years of working, I’ve experienced one very chronic pattern â€"  I’ve tended to wait far too long (years, in certain cases) to do what I instinctively knew was right or that I deeply longed to do. Whether it was staying in business partnerships or relationships that somehow weren’t right for me, or remaining in jobs I disliked intensely, or resisting having the critical conversations with people (including my bosses) that would change everything, I somehow found myself NOT doing what I wanted to, often until a crisis hit that pushed me to make a bold move. Turns out, this experience â€" of waiting years before doing what you long to is a very common practice among thousands of people around the world (I know because I hear from thousands a year asking for help about this). I’ve discovered too through my research that women fall prey to this much more than men. Through my training as a therapist and energy healer, and working with so many people in my coaching programs and courses, I’ve become much more aware of this tendency, and can now see it more clearly for what it is â€" a deeply-entrenched fear of nurturing ourselves, and a fierce resistance against bravely honoring what we believe will make us happy, and ACTING on it. Why do we hold ourselves back from doing what feels right? Below are the top 5 reasons behind our not speaking up, standing up or braving up to take the actions that will create a more nurturing, rewarding and satisfying life that aligns with what we believe and want deep down: You question if you’re right to have these thoughts and feelings Using my life as an example, I waited years too long to take action, because I questioned if I was “right” to think the thoughts I had. For instance, after leaving corporate life and becoming a therapist, I found that the therapy work for me, while rewarding, could be very dark and disturbing. I didn’t want to be in such close proximity every minute of the day with the darkest experiences of human life, including rape, incest, pedophilia, child abuse, drug addiction, depression, and suicidality.   So much despair and pain was wreaking havoc on my own life and it colored my personal experience in many ways. My boundaries just weren’t sufficient at the time to experience all this pain and not have it bleed into my own life. But I felt very badly about thinking about leaving therapy as a profession and I doubted myself. I asked myself over and over, “What kind of true helper and healer am I if I leave this line of work?” So I didn’t leave, for years. Until a crisis occurred (a client called me one morning to tell me she was going to kill herself that moment by wrapping her car around a tree), and I realized that I needed to make a change.   And I’m so glad I found coaching, teaching, writing and training. I use all my therapy experience and knowledge every minute of every day in my coaching and teaching work, but my professional identify and role has shifted to something I love much more, because I finally honored what I felt, deep down. Others may disagree with your thinking, so you doubt yourself So often, my clients tell me that they doubt what they believe or know to be true because others tell them that they’re wrong. I’ve learned this â€" if you listen to other people about what you should want and what they think is best for you, and refuse to make yourself your own highest guide in all things, then you’ll suffer and life won’t go well. After all, you’re the only one on this planet who knows everything about you and can make the best decisions for where you want your life to go. You don’t want anyone to be upset with you, and standing up for yourself upsets people This is a terrible problem for so many women â€" we don’t want to upset anyone by our actions or words. We’ve been societally trained, many of us, to be people pleasers â€" to do, act, appear and speak in ways that are pleasing, comfortable and supportive of others. The problem with that is that it stifles our independence and strength, our ability to think our own thoughts and act bravely on them, especially if they’re going to be upsetting or angering to other people. Again, you can’t live the life you’re meant to if you never want to upset anyone. As a writer, I’ve seen that if you’re not upsetting someone with your ideas, you’re probably not saying anything very important. You are afraid of change or starting over because you don’t want to lose ground Many folks know what they want to do, but are deeply afraid and resistant because this new direction will represent some form of a loss â€" of money, status, self-esteem, position, security, etc. So they don’t make the move, until something forces their hand. The question we need to ask ourselves in these cases is this: “What are you giving up (what is the true cost) of you’re NOT making the move you dream of and that you know will, in the end, suit you better? What are giving up by staying where you are? You somehow (subconsciously) are compelled to remain attached to not loving yourself, because that’s exactly where you’re most comfortable Finally, I’ve seen over and over that, due to pain and damage in our childhoods where we weren’t validated, seen, loved, appreciated or recognized as valuable, we’re more comfortable stuck in pain, disappointment and unhappiness.  You feel more comfortable and familiar with what it’s like to give up on yourself, to play the victim, to hand over your control and to make excuses for all the reasons you can’t have life as you want it. But once you see exactly how your subconscious sabotage is keeping you immersed in pain and regret, and even self-rejection, you’ll never again agree to keep yourself stifled and suppressed. Is it suspicious not to have an online profile - You value your privacy and are not one to jump on the social media bandwagon, so when someone Googles your name, they’ll find a White page’s listing and a link to Ancestry.com. You’re okay with that, but what does it mean for your job search? Is it true that if someone can’t find you among the  955 million monthly active users on Facebook that they should worry there might be something wrong with you? In our connected culture, hiring managers expect to be able to find data about you when they Google your name â€" and they will Google your name. Research shows 40 percent of everyone you meet will try to check you out online. If hiring managers can’t find any relevant information about you, they will wonder why. If you’re in the running for the job, theyll probably try to dive deeper. Do you know what free “deep web” search engines, such as pipl.com or polymeta.com, which store and serve up details a typical Google search does not deliver, say about you? It might not be what you want recruiters to find; you are better off helping recruiters learn what they want to know. When you maintain profiles on the social web and/or create a professional website â€" a social resume (“yourname.com”), you make sure anyone who may want to hire you will find exactly what you want them to know about you. Don’t underestimate how important it is to have an online presence onlineâ€"a digital footprint â€" to help convince potential hiring managers you are right for the job. If you’re wearing a virtual invisibility cloak and protecting your privacy to such an extreme that they can’t find anything about you, your “digital shadow,” the information someone else may post about you online, will become your calling card. Why should you care about that “digital shadow?” Because when you provide no online content, you essentially hand over the keys to your online presence to anyone who may decide to post something about you. Giving control to someone else can be dangerous; when you don’t create content about yourself, anyone with a little online savvy can hijack your name. “Sue” reported Googling herself for the first time and finding that an ex-boyfriend had posted unflattering information about her that potential employers found. She hadn’t already posted anything about herself, so the negative details were prominent results. There is no question having an online reputation can make a big difference for job-search success. Jobvite’s 2012 Social Recruiting Survey found 92 percent of hiring managers use or plan to use social networks. What networks do they use? 93 percent focus on LinkedIn, 66 percent use Facebook, and 54 percent recruit via Twitter. When you disconnect digitally, you miss all of these potential opportunities. What’s the least you should do online if you are serious about your job hunt? Consider a LinkedIn profile a requirement. LinkedIn profiles tend to rank well in search engines, so having a completed profile should make your viewable via Google. It’s okay to protect your Facebook updates with privacy settings, but allow your Work and Education, About You, and Contact Information sections to be public.
